Lake Bunyonyi also known as" a place of many little birds" is locate in the south western uganda between kisoro and kabale and is close to the border with Rwanda. Lake Munyonyi means “a place with many little birds" in reference to the fact that the lake and its islands are home to an amazing collection of bird species. Over 200 species are found here include Herons, Weaver birds and Grey-Crowned Cranes among others. Lake Bunyonyi is the second deepest lake in Africa and it has 29 islands. Lake Bunyonyi is lush foliage hills that are punctuated and was formed about 18000years ago by a volcanic eruption blocking a valley in the Ruchinga Mountains near the present day village of muko on the north-west tip of the lake.
The lakes current outlet is a small stream also by muko which flows into Ruvuma swamp (this in turns flows into the Ruhe-zaminda River that ends at Lake Mutanda). The lake is about 22km long and 6km at its widest and at a height of about 197km. it is surrounded by the mountains that reach heights of 600m above the lake. Lake Bunyonyi is covered with fog in the wee hours of the morning and can be a wonderful place to bring a loved one and scenically a very beautiful place to spend a day or two.
