Jinja City is located in south eastern Uganda where the Nile flows out of Lake Victoria situated at an elevation of 3,740 feet above sea level. Jinja was founded in 1901 as a British administrative center and it became one of the largest town in Uganda when the construction of the Owens Falls Dam now the Nalubale Dam 3 miles down streams, was completed in 1954, the hydroelectric powers thus provided was instrumental in the development of Jinja as the main industrial center in the country.
A second dam, Kiira was later constructed about 0.6 miles from Nalubaale. It was completed in 1999 and begun producing hydroelectric power the next year. Industries include the first steel rolling mill of the eastern Africa, a copper smeltery, plywood and tobacco factories, and a grain conditioning plant. Nearby are the brewery, a textile factory, the large sugar plantation. Product are transported by the lake streams as well as by rail and road. Jinja has rails links with Kampala and the part of Mombasa, Kenya pop.
On the shores of Lake Victoria 4hours drive from Kampala the capital of Uganda second biggest city and considered to be the hub of Africa with numerous adventure activities for tourist such as, Kayaking, watching games, traditional dances, sailing, native flights and tag of wars, horse riding, experience night life, bike riding, village walks, visit the museum, water rafting, visit Busoga kingdom palace, camping, visiting the beaches, hiking mountains, fishing, tubing the Nile, bungee jumping, Sun bathing, trekking, swimming, water skiing, visit forest, windsurfing, cabling, canoeing, cycling, tour sugarcane plantations and factories, visit Jinja city, port pier, visit the source of the Nile, visit makwanzi, Busowoko and Itanda water falls.
Agriculture thrives on the fertile soils, abundant water resources and reliable water sources. Other industries are metal processing, leather and paper processing, grain milling, sugar, some organic fruits, and coffee growing for export, and brewing for local sale. There is some local and export fishing on Lake Victoria.
Jinja being the second largest economy in Uganda. In the past factories chose Jinja as their base because of the nearby electric power station at the Owen falls Dam. Since the early 2000, the economy of Jinja has picked up steadily. The main economic activities take place in the Central business districts.
Agriculture being one of the economic activities in Jinja has also attracted a lot of people and tourist there. The crops grown include, food crops such as beans, cassava, maize, millet, sweet potatoes, soya beans, cow peas, groundnuts, yams, sorghum and cash crops such as cotton, coffee, and sugarcane. Fishing is also another economic activity carried out in Jinja on Lake Victoria.
The tourism sector is booming with numerous hotels, guest houses, resorts pavilions, restaurants, bars, coffee shops, night dance clubs, theatres, golf course, illumations, amusement center zoos, bathing pools, sliding centers, with many more opening up in the city.
